Donal is a Director of STW. He studied Architecture at The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and has 27 years’ experience which includes working on large and complex projects in a healthcare setting.
Donal spent the first year of his BArch studies at the National University of Singapore before returning to Newcastle to complete his degree. After graduating with 1st Class Honours in 1992, he worked in Singapore for five years on various major projects including large scale developments in urban settings. In 1997, he moved to Dublin to join STW, was appointed an Associate in 2001 and became a Director in 2007.
Donal is the dynamic and energetic leader of our Healthcare Division. He is especially interested in developing the patient environment none more so than in mental health settings to improve the therapeutic value to the patients. His recent work on St. Patrick’s Marymount Hospice, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and particularly The National Forensic Mental Health Services captures this passion for the patient environment.
Donal has lectured at many Healthcare Design conferences including ‘Design in Mental Health’ and has been a leading advocate of Evidence Based Design in our work specifically in a mental healthcare environment. Under his guidance STW have completed numerous difficult, challenging and demanding healthcare projects consisting of new build and renovation work with the successful delivery of complex new-build and refurbishment projects on live hospital campuses.
